A fun series of two-hour classes for knitters who want to master the art of sock making.

We’ll knit a pair of adult socks together in the traditional top-down method with heel flap and grafted toe. Along the way, we’ll learn about alternative construction techniques, different styles of heels and toes, and how to adjust your socks for a perfect fit. We’ll also talk about adding patterning to socks (lace, cables, colour), and how that changes the fit.

We’ll use DK weight sock yarn on 3.5 mm needles – just to keep the homework to a minimum – but I’ll give you stitch counts for sock weight, and the process is exactly the same for sock-weight yarn (and DK weight makes great boot socks or hiking socks so I’m sure you’ll make more at this weight afterwards). A ball of WYS Wool Revival DK yarn (enough for a pair of adult socks) is included in the class, but bring your own knitting needles, and a tapestry needle on the last week for grafting the toe.

Jane recommends knitting socks on 2 circular needles – it makes the process very clear, and it’s easy to try on your socks as you go. But if you prefer working small circumferences in the round on one long circular with Magic Loop, or with double-pointed needles, you can of course do that.

Needles can be purchased at the shop on the first night.

“About 20 years ago, I taught myself knitting from a book, and soon I was obsessed, taking projects everywhere I traveled and diving into wool fairs and workshops. I’ve joined knitting trips to Shetland and the Faroe Islands, falling in love with Fair Isle colorwork, lace, and cables. Living in Norway for 11 years, where yarn is found in supermarkets alongside bread, deepened my knitting obsession. I also explore machine knitting, spinning, and crochet, but hand knitting is my sanctuary, keeping me grounded through stressful work, long travels, and even meetings and TV time. I often knit just for the calm it brings, leaving friends with extra hats or socks! Now back home in Edinburgh, I’m excited to share the wonderful world of knitting at Kathy’s Knits.”
